When you purchase or are given a Tarot deck, you will want to cleanse and clear them. Clearing the deck removes negative energy and blockages that could be there from previous owners or the surrounding it was in prior to you. While taking out old energy, you are also infusing your energy into the deck. There are many ways to do this. Choose what resonates best with you.
Usually when people get a new deck of cards, or any spiritual tool, they cleanse and prepare them for use. Especially if it is a deck that has been handed down. This is because everything holds energy. Negative energy can block a reading and previous energy can give mixed signals during a reading. You can ask about something going on with you, and get an answer that is confusing. Some call this energy hopping, shifting from reading to reading. The energy will express itself one way or another, that is why it’s best to get rid of it.
The concept of clearing a deck to let out negative energy, makes room for positive energy. It’s like doing a spring cleaning to your home. Just energetically and for your Tarot decks. The less energetic junk, the lighter the energy of the cards are. When I go a while without clearing my cards, they tend to feel heavier in weight. It's crazy how something invisible can become heavy.
When I do a deep cleansing of my deck, I sage each card and then sit a selenite crystal on top. For a quick clearing before and after a reading, I shuffle and knock on my deck five times. Some people knock three times. It all depends on what number you resonate with. There will be a blog post on numbers coming up soon as well. Another way to cleanse your cards is to put them out in the window to catch the Moon or Sunlight. Be sure to set the intention of what you are doing, because you can charge your cards that way too.

Every divination modality requires some type of energy and intention to perform a reading. Before you go out to a party or go to work, you most likely take a shower. It rejuvenates your energy. The same works for your cards and any divination or ritual tool you use. Cleansing just gives the deck a freshness. So, keep this in mind the next time you do a reading. Give your cards a couple of knocks or a bit a sage to see if it makes a difference in your readings. You’d be surprised at how accurate your readings can be when you make a ritual of cleansing your deck. Oh, and your deck is also an extension of you. So be sure to sage yourself and your space as well.
